Why EarthSential Loves Lemongrass Oil

EarthSential uses only the purest lemongrass essential oil sourced from lush fields in India. Known for its crisp, citrusy aroma and remarkable versatility, lemongrass is one of nature’s most dynamic botanicals.

Antimicrobial & Antifungal Power

Lemongrass oil contains citral (geranial + neral), a powerful compound with proven antimicrobial and antifungal activity—making it an excellent natural cleaner and protector against harmful germs, mold, and mildew.

Natural Insect Repellent

This oil repels mosquitoes, flies, and other insects naturally—without toxic sprays. Its active compound, geraniol, disrupts insect behavior and provides long-lasting repellency.

Anti-Inflammatory & Skin Soothing

Rich in β-myrcene and citral, lemongrass oil helps reduce inflammation and redness, making it a useful ally for skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

Invigorating Aromatherapy

Lemongrass uplifts the mood, relieves stress, and sharpens focus. Its bright scent clears the mind and revitalizes your space—perfect for use in diffusers and therapeutic blends.

Supports Scalp and Hair Health

Add a few drops to your shampoo or conditioner to help combat dandruff and strengthen hair follicles, all while leaving your hair smelling fresh and clean.

Antimicrobial Properties of Lemongrass Essential Oil

Lemongrass Essential oil contains compounds including:

  • Citral (Geranial + Neral)

  • Geraniol

  • Limonene

  • β-Myrcene

What They Do:

  • Kill or inhibit bacteria: Lemongrass oil is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli (E. coli), and Salmonella species.

  • Disrupt microbial membranes: The oil breaks down the outer lipid membranes of microbes, causing them to leak and die.

  • Inhibit growth: It slows or stops the replication of harmful microorganisms.

How It Works:

  • The lipophilic (fat-attracting) nature of citral and other terpenes allows them to penetrate bacterial cell walls.

  • Once inside, they disrupt essential processes like enzyme function and nutrient absorption, leading to microbial death.

Antifungal Properties

Lemongrass oil also shows effectiveness against various fungi. Because it includes these compounds:

  • Citral

  • Geraniol

  • Citronellal

What They Do:

  • Kill fungal cells: Effective against Candida albicans, Aspergillus, and other common fungi.

  • Prevent spore growth: Stops fungi from reproducing and spreading.

  • Destroy fungal membranes: Similar to bacteria, it disrupts the structure of fungal cell membranes.

How It Works:

  • Lemongrass oil’s compounds insert themselves into fungal cell membranes.

  • This causes increased permeability, leading to loss of vital substances and cell death.

    Effect Target Result
Antibacterial E. coli, S. aureus, etc. Cleanses surfaces, protects skin
Antifungal Candida, Aspergillus Prevents mold and fungal infections
Antiviral (limited) Some viruses May inhibit virus replication
